Today

We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee,
for by thy cross thou hast redeemed the world.
Crux-SanClemente

Today has a special meaning to me.
Today is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross.
Today we celebrate Our Lord’s Cross; because of Christ’s suffering and death on the Cross, we have new life.
Today, I find myself six weeks later, still at the foot of our Lord’s Cross over the loss of our precious little baby boy. I still see myself looking up to the Cross and the Heavens in pain as Mary once did when she was at the Foot of her Son’s Cross. I look up with tears falling down and I know that I am not alone. So many mothers and fathers have carried this same cross.
Today, I rejoice with the knowledge that our baby boy is in the very Presence of our Lord. Our little saint is now able to intercede for John and me.
Today, I rejoice at the arrival of our Goddaughter who was safely delivered this morning. She was delivered while her own daddy is deployed on the other side of the world. My heart goes to her mother who bears the Cross of being without his presence.
Today, I still cling to my Cross with empty arms reaching up to the heavens and asking for God’s healing.
Today, I am thankful for my Cross, for without it, I would not have something so deep to offer up to Our Lord.
Today, I will smile and hug my children, but continue to miss the physical touch of my four little ones who have gone before me.
Today, I will try to do my best to lead my children in the faith love and knowledge of our Catholic Faith.
Today, I am thankful for all of you who have sent us cards, flowers, meals, prayer, and love, for without you, this Cross would be so terribly hard to embrace.
Today, I am thankful for the gift of Life, the gift of my loving husband, my children, my Heavenly Children, my family and friends, and especially, for today, I am thankful for gift of another new life.
We all are called during our time here on earth to be placed at the foot of the Cross.
None of us ask to be placed there and know why.
God knows why.
God doesn’t make mistakes.
At any given time, we are called.
God called our family to cling to His Cross as we said goodbye six weeks ago to our newborn after three short days.
God knew best.

By the Holy Cross, Christ has victory over sin and death through His suffering and dying on the Cross. Christ has redeemed the world.

Will you take up your Cross and follow Him? Today I embrace my Cross and I thank God that I have something to offer up. Alone is impossible, but with God, it can be done.

From the Gospel reading this past Sunday we are all reminded by Christ’s words,
“He who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake shall find it.” (Mt 10:38,39).

  1. Thank you for this post, Emily. St. Teresa of Avila has a quote on suffering that I love:

“Suffering is a great favor. Remember that everything soon comes to an end . . . and take courage. Think of how our gain is eternal.”

    Hugs and prayers.

  2. And to think I was getting discouraged by the crosses I have been asked to carry this past 14 months of my dh deployment. I, too, was reminded by Sunday’s gospel of being called to service. Thank you for you inspired and beautiful words. You and your family have been in my prayers for many months. I pray you’ll continue to feel the healing touch of the Holy Spirit. Much love and blessings to you all.
